Tenure Limit: The Finance Ministry demands the resignation of senior directors

The Federal Ministry of Finance has instructed all of its directors who have served in the directorate cadre for eight years to submit their notifications for early retirement in accordance with the new tenure restriction established for directors in the Federal Civil Service, our correspondent learned.

All directors and heads of units within the ministry received a document dated August 3, 2023, signed by Mariya Rufai, the director of administration.

According to The PUNCH, the newly updated Public Service Rules were introduced by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation on July 28, 2023.

It was noted that the Federal Government added a tenure policy for Permanent Secretaries in the recently changed guidelines. Despite what the rule says 

In a communication to all ministries, Folashade Yemi-Esan, the head of the federation's civil service, reportedly demanded for the PSR to be implemented right away.

The memo from the Ministry of Finance, which followed her instructions, read: "I write to refer you to the "2021 Revised Edition" of the Public Service Rules, which is effective as of July 27, 2023. This Internal Circular instructs all Directors (SGL 17) who have held their position for eight years or more to file their notice of retirement in accordance with Section 020909 of the updated PSR, effective as of the date specified therein.

"As a result, all impacted directors are urged to start the documentation process with the Administration Department for a mandatory retirement under the section in question.

Additionally, before leaving, the Directors in question should properly give over to the most senior officers in their departments and turn in any official papers, such as identification cards.

"Please bring the contents of this internal circular to the attention of all parties concerned for strict compliance."
