Niger: Last resort use of force - FG

Should the coup plotters in the Niger Republic refuse to surrender, the Federal Government declared that using force would be a last choice.

This was said on Friday by Adamu Lamuwa, the permanent secretary of the ministry of foreign affairs, during a briefing for the diplomatic corps on the political climate in the Niger Republic and the ECOWAS subregion.

The military coup headed by General Abdourahamane Tchiani unjustly imprisoned the democratically elected President, Mohamed Bazoum, on July 26, 2023.

Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian president and chairman of ECOWAS, decided on sanctions against the coup plotters in Niger who overthrew Bazoum last week on July 30, 2023.

ECOWAS also issued a one-week deadline for the restoration of constitutional order and halted financial transactions with Niger. Additionally, it froze "all service transactions, including energy transactions."

A three-person mission from ECOWAS was dispatched to Niger on Thursday in an effort to break the country's current deadlock.

Lamuwa, who spoke at the occasion, voiced concern that, should the coup succeed, it might damage the prestige of ECOWAS.
