The New Scholarship Program at Target Will Let the Next Wave of Black Talent Shine

To expedite the advancement of racial equity and bring about long-lasting, systemic change for our Black guests, team members, and communities, Target established the Racial Equity Action and Change (REACH) committee in 2020.

A new phase of that strategy is being unveiled today, with the establishment of a scholarship program that will assist students at over a dozen historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). 1,000 first-year students at more than a dozen HBCUs will receive $5,000 scholarships through the Target Scholars Program, in addition to networking, internships, mentoring, and other benefits throughout their time in college.

According to Target's vice president of talent acquisition, Damu McCoy, "Target has worked closely with HBCUs for years, and we're excited to deepen our partnership as these scholarships and support will provide more possibilities for Black students." "Seeing Target invest to create equity and opportunity and support students' success during and after college fills me with great pride."

Recipients will be chosen by our seasoned partners at UNCF (United Negro College Fund), with an emphasis on individuals pursuing careers in technology, design, and leadership.

The new Target Scholars Program is currently accepting applications.  Learn more and apply here.

We encouraged students to take part in Target's first-ever HBCU Design Challenge last year ((check out the winners here), and we'll keep coming up with more ways to help students grow as they mature and serve as mentorship opportunities for our Black team members.

Would you like to participate in a future HBCU Challenge?

Apply now for this year's HBCU Design Challenge if you're a student at an HBCU. Additionally, the new HBCU Technology and Leadership Challenges have concluded; the winners will be revealed shortly.

Target has made several commitments as part of our REACH strategy, which are expanded upon by the new scholarship program. In order to give our Black guests more equitable shopping experiences, we plan to spend over $2 billion with Black-owned businesses by the end of 2025 and increase the representation of Black people on our team over the next three years.
